Essentials For an Alaska Road Vehicle

ESSENTIALS FOR AN ALASKA ROAD VEHICLE

Fred Dyson – Dyson Starboard View - Gearhead Stuff

 Must-Have Features

Four-wheel or all-wheel drive

Anti-lock brakes

A great heater that warms up quick and defrosts effectively, including the back window

A way to turn off the “traction control” if so equipped so that you can get a run at hill or snow bank without the traction control cutting off power when a wheel starts spinning.

Headlights that penetrate the fog, drifting snow, and darkness without blinding on coming vehicles

Towing hooks on all four corners for getting towed out of ditches and snow banks

Should-Have Features

Independent suspension on all wheels

Clearance on all wheel wells for putting on chains or larger knobby tires

A trailer hitch

A roof rack at least capable of carrying a kayak, bike, or all of a caribou or most of a moose

Room and storage places for some tools and a minimal roadside survival kit

Excellent rust protection

A vehicle that is designed so that if you hit a tall moose broadside, the body of the moose does not come through the windshield - hitting a moose can be a traumatic experience and it is hard to get the smell of moose guts out of the upholstery

A bumper, grill, and skid plate configuration that does not pack snow onto the radiator and engine when you are plowing through deep snow
