Black America - A Bloody Mess

BLACK AMERICA - A BLOODY MESS

Noted statistician Nate Silver listened to Barack Obama’s incredibly politicized pre-fundraiser speech yesterday about the Emanuel AME Zion Church massacre in Charleston, and decided to crunch some numbers.

“We as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries,” President Obama said earlier today, in reaction to the killing of nine people at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday.  The details of the case, including the motivations of the suspect, Dylann Roof, are still unfolding.  (We encourage you to read coverage broadly, including from our colleagues at ABC News.)  But I wanted to add just a little bit of context to Obama’s remarks — how the U.S. compares to other countries overall, and how that comparison obscures a wide racial divide:  Black Americans are far more likely to be homicide victims than white Americans.

Read all of Mr. Silver’s analysis to see how he reached his determination.  But the end result is that he determined American blacks are eight times more likely to be murdered than American whites, and while they live in an “advanced country” by any measure, they have a homicide victim rate that you’d expect from a third-world hellhole.

The following chart visualizing the stark difference is equal parts sobering, and saddening.

Silver firmly establishes that there is a massive racial disparity in homicide victims in the United States, but then stops short of asking and answering the obvious question:

Who is responsible for killing black Americans at such incredibly high rates?

If you listened to the way that radical activists, Democrat politicians, and the mainstream media are attempting to politicize racial issues during the Obama administration, you could almost be conned into thinking that law enforcement officers, white Republicans, Fox News, and the occasional serial killer are to blame for the majority of black homicides every year in the United States.

But that simply isn’t true.

I’m not a tenth the statistician that Silver is, and so forgive me if I miss the nuances of the following FBI Uniform Crime Report, which captures both the race and sex of the victim and the race and sex of offender known as “Table 6,” in the 2010-2012 time period in which Silver was working.

For 2010:

For 2011:

For 2012:

Again, I don’t remotely claim to be a statistician, but it appears to be quite clear in these three tables that far and away that the greatest threat to American blacks is other American blacks, and that if we break that down further, far and away the number-one killer of black males in America is other black males.

If we remove that violent subculture, we actually have a relatively low murder rate, as Bill Whittle noted in a video earlier this year.
